I was able to learn a lot about my experience with the refugees I assisted tonight. Although I was nervous when I first met them I was able to adjust. They did not know much English or understand a lot of concepts at first, but were able to learn very quickly. I found that the kids were able to understand a lot easier than the adults were. It was very interesting to see how much progress they were able to make in such a short period of time. When we started they did not know several words or pictures, but were able to match words with pictures and read sentences. By teaching them simple English I was able to learn from them. Since it already comes so easy to me I had to learn how to simplify everything. I learned to be patient and understanding. What helped me was visualizing myself in the same situation and how I would want to learn it. Overall, it was a good learning experience for to communicate with someone who has nothing in common with me.
